International Conference: 18-20 May 2011, University of Oslo
The University of Oslo celebrates its 200 year anniversary in 2011. Being responsible for Norway’s oldest and largest university based teacher education programme we want to take this opportunity to focus on challenges confronting teaching and learning in today’s society. The conference will bring together Nordic, European and North American scholars within the fields of teacher education, language learning and science/math education.
The first day will be devoted to teacher education, with Rachel Lotan from Stanford Teacher Education Program as a keynote. From there we will discuss models of teacher education across Europe. A common perspective for day 2 and 3 is the role of literacy in teaching and learning. Cross-curricular language skills, also known as key competencies, have become increasingly important in European education, raising questions of how oral and written language is used in various subjects. This will be approached from different angles in the keynotes by Helmut Vollmer from Osnabrück University and Phil Scott from Leeds University. In addition there will be paper presentations focusing on a number of topics connected to the overall themes of the conference, such as the role of new media in language learning and the challenge of student recruitment to math/science education.
